Post Saitama Game Day, March 8th
It's taken a while, but I finally booked at the Miyashiro shinshuukan
again:

Date: March 8th (sunday)
Time: 10am to 5pp
Cost: whatever you feel like (the room cost is only 2100 yen, so while
I'd appreciate donations I'm happy to spring for it)

Location: Miyashiro Town Shinshuukan (進修館) ()

Access: Take the Tobu Isesaki Line/Hanzomon line to Tobu-dobutsu-koen
station (approx 48 min from Oshiage, 53 min from Tobu-Asakusa if
you're coming from the south). When you leave the ticket gate, go to
the West Exit. Go down the stairs, and you will see a bus/taxi loop
and a road leading away from the station. Walk along this road, past
the Lawson's convenience store, until you come to a set of traffic
lights. Right across this intersection on the right you will see a
large red brick building with a very fantasy-esque architecture.
That's the Shinshuukan. Enter via the doors facing the intersection,
and just follow the hallway until you reach a room full (well,
hopefully - but there'll be at least one) of gaming gaijin.

The space I have booked is large enough for 10+ people to run a few
different games simultaneously, and also has a whiteboard.

I'll be bringing:
- a pack of playing cards
- a go board
- Lord of the Rings boardgame by Reiner Knizia (released by Capcom)
- a one-off RPG, system etc as yet undecided but probably SF of some
flavour.
- books for a SF/Fantasy book exchange

Anyone else who's planning on attending, it would be great if you
posted what you plan to bring so people who are still undecided can
see what's on the menu!

Hopefully we'll see a nice turnout this time 'round.

Kevyn

Sounds good Kevyn!

I took the liberty of moving the post to the event-forum. :)

I'll be there and I'll probably bring Android and Battlestar Galactica... and maybe something else, we'll see.

Thanks - I wasn't sure where would be best, and didn't look that closely at the forums list <g>

I'll be coming, barring unforeseen scheduling trouble.

I can bring the Illuminati card game (still haven't gotten to play it), Settlers of Cataan, and fluxx (a very lite game I bought for my English club at work).

What is the LOTR board game like?

John

Ah... Illuminati! I haven't played that for ages. Would be fun to give it a go. :)

It looks interesting, but I haven't had an opportunity to play it yet and the rules are in Japanese, so I'll want to reread them. Basically, the idea is that each of the players takes the part of one of the hobbits (for reasons unknown, the designer decided to include an extra who only has a couple of cameos in the books as AFAIK didn't appear at all in the movies). The player's pieces then move along a series of tracks according to the play of cards and rolling of dice. There's a simultaneous main track that represents the state of Middle Earth (in the hands of Darkness, or freedom) and a marker representing Sauron. If Sauron's piece reaches a certain point on the main track, the game is lost. If any of the hobbits reaches a certain point, Sauron loses and the game is won. It looks like the game can be played cooperatively or in competition, with the basic goal being to do both of:

a) getting the Ring to Mt.Doom
b) preventing Sauron's influence from becoming too great

It seems interesting, because it looks as though it's possible for the game to end without necessarily achieving the goals, but there are lots of sub-goals to work toward as well. Very complex, story-wise, but the actual play seems simple.

I haven't played it for a long time but it's quite fun. Although I seem to recall it becoming rather easy once you figured out the mechanics.

The hobbit wouldn't be would it? If it is, I'm disgusted with myself. Why is it I can recall the names of random hobbits more easily than my parents' birthdays?

Sadly, yes it is Fatty Bolger - and I'm ashamed to admit that while I have trouble remembering coworkers names at times I knew immediately who Fatty was and which parts of the books he could be found in...

Oh, the Saitama Game Day is not an RPG day? That is news.
