Post Insufferable ******* - Kagemaro [EDH]
Place holder post while I work on this deck.

Had actually written up a huge long decklist/explanation of how this deck is supposed to "work", but I decided it would be more fun to let everyone discover for themselves next week. I think I'll post the ingredients after I see the reactions (Peter and Sean got to see the preview last week... SHHH, DON'T GIVE ANYTHING AWAY GAIZ, IT WILL RUIN THE FUN).

Post As promised, the decklist
So this idea comes to me, right?
"I seem to attract a lot of table hate whenever I play because I keep 'drawing agro' somehow. So maybe I should try making a less threatening defensive deck and see how that goes?"

So I thought I'd see how it goes'd:

    General
    Kagemaro, First to Suffer

    Mana
    Swamp x 22
    Cabal Coffers
    Grim Monolith
    Journeyer's Kite
    Phyrerxian Totem
    Sol Ring
    Extraplanar Lens
    Black Market
    Jet Medallion
    Chrome Mox
    Gauntlet of Power
    Thran Dynamo
    Mana Vault
    Gilded Lotus
    Paradise Plume

    Draw
    Necropotence
    Greed
    Promise of Power
    Syphon Mind
    Scroll Rack
    Sensei's Divining Top
    Well of Lost Dreams
    Phyrexian Arena
    Graveborn Muse
    Decree of Pain
    Pain's Reward
    Night's Whisper
    Sign in Blood
    Ancient Craving
    Ambition's Cost
    Phyrexian Etchings
    Mind's Eye

    Tutor
    Demonic Tutor
    Vampiric Tutor
    Diabolic Tutor
    Beseech the Queen
    Insidious Dreams
    Diabolic Intent
    Demonic Collusion
    Skyship Weatherlight
    Planar Portal
    Shred Memory
    Dimir Machinations
    Dimir House Guard
    Brainspoil
    Neitherborn Phalanx
    Death Wish

    Recursion
    Yawgmoth's Will
    Beacon of Unrest
    Feldon's Cane
    Skull of Orm
    Animate Dead
    Grim Discovery
    Petrified Field

    Cover my ***
    No Mercy
    Dread
    Plague Wind
    Nevinyrral's Disk
    Oblivion Stone
    Icy Manipulator
    Ring of Gix
    Amber Prison
    Predator, Flagship
    Altar of Shadows
    Mourner's Shield
    Sudden Spoiling

    Other
    Mind Stone
    Reliquary Tower
    Library of Leng
    Spellbook
    Voltaic Key
    Ring's of Brighthearth
    Ivory Tower
    Eternity Vessel

[added at the last second for ****s&gigs]
    Death Match
    Thran Lens
    Stromgald Cabal

Basically took out every win condition I could think of (yes, with the deck stacked with as much Black-super-draw as it is, Kagemaro could potentially be quite a force to reckon with... so that's why I never played him).
And with that, I sat back to see what would happen.

The results of the "experimental" completely non-offensive deck?

It would appear it doesn't matter what kind of deck I use, as long as I'm playing Black, I'm going to draw hate.
...
Aaron, I think I know how you felt, if only to a minor degree...

Oh, and don't worry, this was a once only social-experiment thing. The real "this deck actually does something" Kagemaro will be back next week.

PS.

Ahh, but wouldn't a futa be less likely to cut anything off?

I can`t speak for others but I swung at you cuz I had 4 2/2 Zomibes with lifelink and you had no blockers.

Oh, yeah, for sure, that was expected. I couldn't get any of my protection out because everyone kept getting rid of it (Dread, Mourner's Shield, etc). I could have played Kagemaro 5 turns in and used him as a "don't attack me or I'm wiping the board" threat, but I was trying to play as non-offensively as possible (and to me, that meant no griefing). Besides, by that point I still had enough life left that it wouldn't have mattered too much, and I had plans to go get my Eternity Vessel a couple turns afterward... plans that were immediately dashed, mind you (not sure why he was gunning for me SO HARD that game. Blocking all my attempts to Animate Dead creatures, killing all my protection artifacts, beating on me when I had the lowest life, despite the fact that I had never threatened him once the whole game... I dunno, maybe he had it out for me from a previous week or something?)
*shrug*

Regardless, I still have to figure out what I want to do to Kagemaro next. I'm thinking that "super massive Black draw spells make Kagemaro f*cking enormous" thing might be worth pursuing.

Generally, playing with a less threatening deck is only going to pay off over the course of several games. I have actually built a deck that, for all intents and purposes, CANNOT WIN; in the first game, Aaron tried to ttake me out first because my Magus of the Vineyard was causing him to manaburn every turn, because his Sanity Grinding deck had almost no colorless mana symbols. Fairly freakish odds of that happening, and everyone else benefited from the Magus, but even then I received some attention just because my defenses were relatively weak and people just feared the unknown. Given a chance to play it more than twice, I'm sure people would adjust to a lower KNOWN threat level, but a monoblack deck full of tutors (which suspiciously DOESN'T play its general, is not to be ignored!
